The House of Representatives will be voting today
or tomorrow on legislation to create a uniform Maine Building Code.
The legislation states that towns with building codes in place may voluntarily
adopt the new Maine Building Code. If a municipality does not have a set
of codes, it will be required to adopt the new Maine Building code, which
is comprised of the International Residential Codes and the International
Building Codes. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is lobbying
to amend the legislation to allow towns to choose to implement either
the new Maine Building Code or the NFPA 5000 Building and Fire Code. Passing
this amendment would defeat the purpose of creating a consistent, uniform
and statewide building code. URGE YOUR
REPRESENTIVE TO VOTE “NO” ON THE AMENDMENT TO ADD THE NFPA
BUILDING AND FIRE CODE TO LD 1025!
