GUIDE TO
DEVELOPING AN EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK
Published by the NRLA, with the assistance of Jackson Lewis LLP,
this newly updated guide (June 2003) can help management develop
or update appropriate and lawful personnel policies and communicate
these policies to employees in a positive manner.
While minor law changes and changes for the ease of reading were
made, major substantive updates have been made to the following
sections: Equal Employment Opportunity, Sexual Harassment Policy,
Paid Vacations, Leave of Absence, Smoking, Solicitation and Distribution,
Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Policy, etc.
Management should note that employee handbooks have, in recent years,
increasingly become the subject of litigation. In such lawsuits,
former employees often claim that statements in such manuals created
contractual obligations, which have been broken. However, properly
drafted, employee manuals can actually reduce the likelihood of
costly and time-consuming employee litigation. Our Guide has been
carefully drafted with this objective in mind.
Your Guide to Developing an Employee
Handbook is available, in electronic format, through
the Northeastern Retail Lumber Association (NRLA). This handbook
is available free to members. For more details, or to obtain the electronic template, email Sandy Zelka at szelka@nrla.org or call 800-292-6752.

PAYROLL SERVICE
It does not matter whether you have one, two, five, or fifty employees.
Payroll and payroll tax reporting are not simple tasks. Many small
businesses do not have the time, resources, or the expertise to
keep abreast of the ever-changing tax laws. If you want peace of
mind, the elimination of payroll tax worries, and the opportunity
to save 20 percent off the regular
price of payroll processing and discounted pricing on other selected
human resource products (applies to new clients only), then NRLA
and Automatic Data
Processing (ADP) has the program for you! For more details
email Sandy Zelka at szelka@nrla.org or call 800-292-6752.
